At <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wqm6G5DjaI#t=14m45s">14:45</a> Rob Faludi demonstrates the ingenious <a href="http://www.botanicalls.com/">Botanicalls</a> system, a clever use of wireless sensors that allows plants to send out Tweets when they need light or water.</p>
<p>At <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wqm6G5DjaI#t=18m30s">18:30</a> Ola Ahlvarsson, CEO of Keynote Media, cites an intriguing point made by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Bezos often compares our current use of internet based technologies to the introduction of the light bulb prior to the widespread application of electricity in things like home appliances. Essentially the idea that we&#8217;re at the light bulb stage of the internet, or in other words, only scratching the surface of possibilities.</p>

<p>&#8220;A brand is the set of expectations, memories, stories and relationships that, taken together, account for a consumer’s decision to choose one product or service over another.</p>
<p>A brand&#8217;s value is merely the sum total of how much extra people will pay, or how often they choose, the expectations, memories, stories and relationships of one brand over the alternatives.&#8221;</p>
<p><span id="more-806"></span><a href="http://www.yabstadigital.com/staging/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/defining-your-brand.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-812" alt="Branding Your Business" src="http://www.yabstadigital.com/staging/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/defining-your-brand.jpg" width="774" height="317" /></a>This definition serves as a useful reference and practical starting point when laying out the underlying <a href="http://www.yabstadigital.com/staging/why-you-should-integrate-your-print-marketing-with-online/">strategies</a> for your organization&#8217;s advertising and promotional activities. It also helps us counter the widely held misconception that your brand is merely your logo or the catchy tagline lining your marketing collateral. On the contrary, your brand is much more. In fact your brand is really a complex blend of tangible and intangible <a href="http://www.brandeo.com/node/938">characteristics</a>, perhaps more intangible as elaborated upon in Seth Godin&#8217;s definition.</p>
<p><b>Intangible Elements</b></p>
<p>The intangible attributes of your brand are arguably the most elusive to define aspects of branding your company, product or service. What does your brand represent? What are its core values, its culture, benefits and personality? How does your brand <i>speak</i> to your target audience? These are just some of the key questions that, when answered, can greatly influence the tangible side of your branding equation.  These could also be regarded as the things people do not readily see, but rather feel and experience when they engage with your brand. For example, how ergonomically designed is your product and how do customers feel when they use it? When your customers fill out a contact form on your Web site or call your customer service department, how are these interactions handled?  In each instance there is an opportunity (or failure) to brand your organization. These are often referred to as brand touchpoints. That is, points of contact between your products and services and customers. These touchpoints form a series of <a href="http://www.brandeo.com/node/938">associations, feelings, attitudes and perceptions</a> which ultimately shape people&#8217;s opinions of your brand.</p>
<p>Your customers&#8217; associations, feelings, attitudes and perceptions are what essentially differentiate your brand. The challenge is to zero-in on what is most unique about your particular offerings in ways that will be memorable to your prospects. For example, your company may sell financial planning services, but so do dozens of other companies in your immediate locale. The question then arises, how is your company different from the competition in ways that are meaningful to your target customer? One of the first steps in branding your organization is to create a positioning statement or point of difference. This could be written in a few bullet points articulating the essence of your organization&#8217;s core purpose along with your brand&#8217;s ethos. These points may also encompass more abstract and aspirational qualities such as your company&#8217;s mission and vision statements. Your company&#8217;s mantra or 30-second &#8220;this is what we do&#8221; elevator pitch, if clearly defined, will guide your company&#8217;s brand positioning efforts in the marketplace and act as a catalyst in the creation of tangible brand elements.</p>
<p><b>Tangible Elements</b></p>
<p>Once your brand&#8217;s intangible attributes have been clearly defined it&#8217;s now possible to start building a visual language around your brand&#8217;s essential attributes. Your brand&#8217;s visual identity will ideally be expressed through your logoform, wordmark and often a succinct tagline or positioning line. These core elements should distill the essence of your brand&#8217;s overarching characteristics and speak to the intangible attributes we defined prior.<br />
If, for example, your brand is luxurious, fun and energetic and caters primarily to a sophisticated urban-minded female audience, then it makes sense to support that narrative with appropriate visual elements. Designing your brand in this context begins with selecting a colour palette and a typographic style that relate to the story you are telling. From there, all imagery and graphic symbolism should optimally relate to your brand&#8217;s tone and manner and empathize with your audience&#8217;s complex array of <a href="http://bradwest.wordpress.com/2012/03/28/psychographics-over-demographics-4/">wants and needs</a>.</p>
<p>This groundwork will guide all future creative, marketing and design efforts associated with your brand. This includes traditional and digital media campaigns, merchandising, and promotion, all working together to build a loyal customer brand base.</p>

<p>Branding your business starts with a coherent understanding of its intangible attributes. Once these elements have been solidified they will support the creation of tangible brand elements. From there we can think about the bigger picture in terms of defining the scope of your branding, which we will discuss in my next post.</p>

<p>Your Web site is currently under siege. Web audiences are <a href="http://www.yabstadigital.com/staging/understanding-digitally-distracted-audiences/">reading less and less</a> these days, jumping from site to site rarely engaging beyond a couple mouse clicks. In this <a href="http://www.paleycenter.org/carnegie-reaching-the-audience/">fragmented</a> digital media landscape grabbing your audience&#8217;s attention has never been more challenging.</p>
<p><span id="more-640"></span><br />
<img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-642" alt="screens" src="http://www.yabstadigital.com/staging/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/screens.jpg" width="774" height="435" />The Web, once the domain of simple utilitarian sites comprised predominantly of text and few images, has evolved into a rich, distraction-inducing feast for the senses. Motion-graphics, banner advertisements and streaming videos have become staples of the modern Web experience. Click Here! Like this! Pin It! Retweet This Article! The Web is full of interactive forks in the road all vying for a piece of the screen and, significantly, a shrinking slice of the audience&#8217;s attention.</p>
<p>Through proper planning, design, and sound technical execution, your digital presence can shine and differentiate what&#8217;s unique about your business&#8217;s products and services to hyperactive Web audiences.</p>
<p>I will touch upon 2 core design elements that, if properly addressed, will enhance your Web site&#8217;s overall user experience, and set the stage for longer visits and stronger audience interactions.</p>
<p><b>Design Principle #1: Scale and Proportion</b></p>
<p>As desktop screens get larger and larger in terms of resolution &#8211;that&#8217;s the number of viewable pixels in the horizontal and vertical plane&#8211;modern Web user interfaces should take full advantage of this additional screen real estate.</p>
<p>An aging Web site built a mere 5 years ago will usually stick out like a sore thumb occupying just a small portion of the available browser area. In these cases the site in question may have been optimized for 1024-by-768 pixel displays, the dominant screen resolution 5+ years ago. Text will likely appear miniscule and will be difficult to read and images and important elements governing the site&#8217;s function (e.g. menu items, text input fields on contact forms) will lose their effectiveness visually and in terms of usability.</p>
<p>In the same way a Web site that <i>hasn&#8217;t</i> been <a href="http://www.yabstadigital.com/staging/mobile-ux-design-primer/">optimized for mobile</a> forces users to jump through hoops to get things done, so too an antiquated site designed for 1024-by-768 pixel displays can undermine audience engagement.</p>
<p>Fundamentally these issues can be resolved by using the entire Web browser. A modern Web site should strike a strong visual presence in the browser. That means large, bold headlines, expansive (but not distracting) imagery, big, easy to scan text; and clear, visually intuitive menus and calls-to-action that draw audiences inside to explore more of your site&#8217;s content.</p>
<p><b>Design Principle #2: Minimalism </b></p>
<p>Clutter is distracting. Busy looking Web pages encourage visitors to move quickly through pages rather than read through information. Limiting the number of competing graphical elements on any given page and visually prioritizing core messages can help your audience to focus on the content that is most important.</p>
<p>Many poorly designed Web sites barrage users with successive arrays of gratuitous and often irrelevant graphical callouts and Ads. Loading down your site’s pages with ineffective visuals may in fact have the opposite effect and drive people away.</p>
<p>Clean and simple always wins the day in the modern digital space. A great Web site experience starts with pairing down the competing messages and limiting unnecessary graphical embellishments, particularly around the outer perimeters of a Web layout –sidebar columns, header and footer area.</p>
<p>Similarly, reducing the amount of copy while increasing the size of body text greatly reduces the overall cognitive effort required to absorb information.</p>
<p><strong>&#8230;</strong></p>
<p>Thoughtful design and content are the basis of successful user experiences on the Web. Limiting user distractions through proper planning and technical execution helps your target audience focus on your content and perform important tasks like finding your address and contact information. Consequently one of the best ways to ensure your site breaks through the clutter on the Web.</p>

The digital world has created a never ending array of information resources and also its fair share of time-wasting distractions catering to just about every niche interest imaginable.  Reaching your audience has never been more challenging; standing out from the sea of clutter and sifting through the noise has become a daunting proposition for businesses entering the digital space.</p>
<p><span id="more-539"></span></p>
<p><a href="http://www.yabstadigital.com/staging/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/digitally-distracted.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-540" alt="digitally-distracted-audiences" src="http://www.yabstadigital.com/staging/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/digitally-distracted.jpg" width="774" height="317" /></a>The growing influx of media choices at our disposal now includes social networks (take your pick), mobile apps, Netflix, DVRs, Youtube, and much, much more. These services and platforms are all competing for a narrowing slice of the audiences&#8217; attention in what many experts agree is an increasingly <a href="http://www.paleycenter.org/carnegie-reaching-the-audience/">fragmented</a> media landscape. Not surprisingly, with so many media and information options available attention spans are getting shorter leading to the popular notion we&#8217;re reading <a href="http://www.slate.com/articles/technology/technology/2013/06/how_people_read_online_why_you_won_t_finish_this_article.html">less</a> and skimming text (on Web pages) as opposed to reading pieces fully from beginning to end.</p>
<p>Jakob Nielsen, a Web usability expert, conducted a <a href="http://www.nngroup.com/articles/how-little-do-users-read/">study</a> back in 2008 and found that Web audiences (at the time) were reading just 28% of the words on the average Web page. In an earlier 1997 study, Nielsen performed research on<a href="http://www.nngroup.com/articles/applying-writing-guidelines-web-pages/"> how people read websites</a> and found an astonishing 79% of test users scanned any new page they came across, with just 16% of test users reading word-by-word.</p>
<p>A more recent 2013 study by analytics vendor <a href="https://chartbeat.com/" target="_blank">Chartbeat</a> reviewed several high-traffic Web sites including Slate Magazine and found that most visitors would scroll through upwards of 50 to 60% of an article page, suggesting audiences were reading less than 1/3 of the text on any given page, or at least on the specific Web pages tested.</p>
<p>So clearly this isn&#8217;t a new trend. But what&#8217;s perpetuating this behavior?</p>
<p>Interestingly back during the Web 1.0 era the typical Web page layout was probably somewhere in the neighbourhood of 80 to 90% text-to-image. Today, thankfully, excruciatingly slow dial-up internet connections are largely a thing of the past and the ratio of text-to-image based content is arguably skewed in the opposite direction in favor of &#8220;rich media&#8221;. Things like streaming audio and video, motion-graphic banner ads, interactive info-graphics and games. The Web is is clearly becoming a more visually oriented medium, in many ways resembling television, though more participatory in nature.</p>
<p>Twitter, of course, is the poster child for the new brevity of communication that has become so prevalent in the social media sphere. Got something to say? You&#8217;ve got 140-characters or less. Don&#8217;t have time to write a comment? You can always <i>Like</i> or <i>Pin</i> a response instead; <em>retweet</em> and <em>reblog</em> to your heart&#8217;s content. And now there&#8217;s <a href="http://vine.co/">Vine</a>, a sort of Twitter meets YouTube social app that allows users to post and share videos that have a maximum length of just 6 seconds.</p>
<p>Digital media consumption behaviours are clearly changing as is the way we&#8217;re communicating with one another through the <i>wireless-everywhere-Web</i>. In many ways ubiquitous internet access coupled with greater bandwidth speeds has ushered in a culture of immediacy in which people now expect an instantaneous flow of information. The Web is an active medium in which audiences are engaged with content and want to go from site to site, post to post, Tweet to Tweet, and get things done. But the question remains: are audiences reading?</p>
<p>In my next post I&#8217;ll explore a number of design and content strategies you can employ to connect with these text-skimming site-jumping time-strapped digitally distracted audiences. Stay tuned.</p>

Social media increasingly plays a significant role in our clients&#8217; digital marketing efforts. We believe an active social media presence encourages stronger, more lucrative interactions between our clients, their brands, and their audience.</p>
<p>Facebook, often seen as a barometer for how influential the social Web has become, recently <a href="https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151908376636729.1073741825.20531316728&amp;type=1">reported</a> their monthly active users have grown to a staggering 1.11-billion people, up 23% from 901-million just 1-year earlier. Advertising revenue has similarly kept pace up to $1.25-billion in the first quarter of 2013, up 43% from $872-million in the first quarter of 2012.</p>
<p>Clearly we&#8217;re spending more time online, particularly with social media and we&#8217;re <a title="Teens, Social Media, and Privacy | Pew Research Center - May 21, 2013" href="http://pewinternet.org/Reports/2013/Teens-Social-Media-And-Privacy.aspx">sharing much more</a> about ourselves. Not surprisingly, one of the fastest growing segments of the Web, demographically speaking, are teens and millennials. The epicentre for this group: the once obscure now completely mainstream <a href="https://www.tumblr.com/">Tumblr</a> network. Last week Yahoo! shelled out $1.1-billion U.S. to capitalize on Tumblr&#8217;s diverse mix of digital <a title="Learn more about different Digital lifestyles" href="http://tnsdigitallife.com/segments">communicators, networkers, and influencers</a>, further evidence social networks are poised to become the biggest advertising platforms of the future —that is, if you needed any proof.<br />
<span style="line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;"><br />
The undeniable power of social media is matched by the diversity of its presentation and the audiences it attracts. With so much choice, finding the right fit for each client is the challenge, the fun, the joy. We’re pushing hard to make them all champions of the digital space.</span></p>

We could certainly dig up many more statistics bolstering the argument for mobile, however we&#8217;re confident you&#8217;re one of the <a title="Cisco Visual Networking Index: Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast Update, 2012–2017" href="http://www.cisco.com/en/US/solutions/collateral/ns341/ns525/ns537/ns705/ns827/white_paper_c11-520862.html">4.3 billion</a> people actively participating in the vibrant mobile economy — a number expected to grow to <a title="Forbes.com - Cisco Mobile Data Shows Surge in Smartphone Users, 4G Usage" href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/connieguglielmo/2013/02/06/cisco-mobile-data-shows-surge-in-smartphone-users-4g-usage/">5.2 billion</a> people by 2017. </p>
<p><span id="more-400"></span></p>
<p>In this post we&#8217;ll look at the mobile equation from more of a <a title="learn more about the elements of User Experience Design" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_experience_design#Elements_of_User_Experience_Design">UX design</a> perspective by delving into some of the key elements that will ensure your audience has a great experience when interacting with your digital content through a mobile device.</p>
<p>The mobile Web is unique from the traditional desktop browser experience. The most obvious difference is screen size. While mobile displays are physically much smaller than conventional laptop and desktop screens, most modern smartphones will usually run a higher screen resolution (a.k.a. pixel density), somewhere in the neighbourhood of 150 ppi (<i>that&#8217;s pixels per inch</i>) all the way up to 326 ppi on the iPhone 5. Again, this resolution is much higher than you&#8217;ll typically find on a desktop monitor. Inevitably this will cause an older Web site —that is, one that has not been mobile-optimized— to render at a much smaller size in a mobile Web browser. Page headlines and body text for example, set at a common 14 pixels or less, will likely appear illegible to most readers. In 2 and 3-column Web site layouts this problem is amplified by the additional information cluttering up the limited screen dimensions which causes everything to appear tiny in the viewable screen area.</p>
<p>In a mobile-optimized layout <i>less is more</i>. Removing sidebar columns in favour of a single column layout lends precious screen real estate which can be devoted to larger body text and more clearly defined menus and buttons allowing for greater overall ease of use and less eye strain on the part of the user.</p>
<p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-427" alt="poor-mobile-design-example" src="http://www.yabstadigital.com/staging/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/poor-mobile-design-example.jpg" width="426" height="240" />Formula1.com is a textbook example of a desktop centric Web site that renders poorly on a mobile device (<i>screenshot taken on Samsung Galaxy SIII smartphone</i>). In this particular case a conventional 2-column layout becomes a usability nightmare even when rendered in landscape mode. Having trouble reading the text? This is a classic mobile UX faux-pas. Visitors are forced to constantly zoom-in on specific regions of the interface and pan around the screen to effectively read text or navigate between pages. Buttons and text hyperlinks are insufficiently proportioned to accommodate touch inputs —that is, finger taps as opposed to mouse clicks.</p>
<p><img class="size-full wp-image-421 alignright" alt="yd-dot-com-mobile-screenshot" src="http://www.yabstadigital.com/staging/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/yd-dot-com-mobile-screenshot.jpg" width="240" height="426" />A great example of a mobile-optimized Web experience is this very site you&#8217;re reading right now. <a href="http://www.yabstadigital.com/staging/">Yabstadigital.com</a> employs a fully responsive design layout that dynamically sizes and reorients visual elements to make the best possible use of the available screen real estate.<br />
You could think of a responsively designed Web site as one that intuitively knows how big the user&#8217;s screen or browser area is and how best to rearrange the content for optimal display efficiency. If you&#8217;re curious and on a laptop or desktop computer, try resizing your Web browser window to see how our site layout smartly adapts to the changing window dimensions as you expand or contract the browser area. Whether you&#8217;re viewing this site on a gigantic 27-inch desktop monitor or a 4-inch smartphone, headlines and body text will always render clear and readable; buttons and menu items will be easily accessible for touch or mouse driven input, and above all, distractions such as excessive page scrolling and zooming in/out actions will be kept to a minimum allowing you to focus on the site content itself rather than wrestling with the interface.</p>
<p>Mobile design considerations play a critical role in establishing credibility in the digital space and require special attention. As we&#8217;ve seen, a poorly executed mobile site conspires to undermine the user experience and can result in higher <a title="Bounce rate is the percentage of visits that go only one page before exiting a site." href="https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/1009409?hl=en">bounce rates</a> and leave your audience with a fractured impression of your business offerings.</p>
<p>By contrast, a well planned and executed mobile design strategy has the capacity to enhance audience engagement with your brand, product or service and foster more successful interactions. Mobile is quite simply an investment in your business&#8217;s future livelihood and competitiveness.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Last week the cellular phone celebrated an incredible milestone. 40 years ago on April 3, 1973, Martin Cooper, a senior engineer at Motorola, made the first mobile phone call from a Manhattan New York street corner with a prototype design that would eventually go on to become the world&#8217;s first commercially available mobile phone in 1983. At a whopping $3,995 US, the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorola_DynaTAC">DynaTAC 8000x</a> model was arguably one of the most expensive personal tech-oriented accessories of the day. Not surprisingly these first cellular phones began making regular appearances on popular TV and in movies, taking on the aura of an exclusive and rather impractical tech toy perhaps only the rich and powerful could ever hope to afford. </p>

Mobile phones have become incredibly ubiquitous in the marketplace and are currently the driving force behind the growing digital economy.</p>
<p>A recent <a href="http://www.nielsen.com/content/dam/corporate/us/en/reports-downloads/2013%20Reports/Mobile-Consumer-Report-2013.pdf">Nielsen report</a> suggests the growth of mobile devices has reached a &#8220;critical mass&#8221; with greater than 80% of consumers 16-years of age and older in developed countries using a mobile phone. In terms of daily usage, we&#8217;re using our phones for an ever widening array of tasks, from video streaming and price-comparison shopping, to email, social networking, banking and location-based navigation. Many of these tasks several years ago were only possible through desktop computers. Smartphone devices, now with greater processing power and larger screen sizes, are providing a viable alternative to the traditional desktop Web experience.<br />
With more of our Web surfing taking place on smartphones and smaller tablet computer devices, it&#8217;s important to consider the benefits of a well-design mobile site and how proper execution can impact your company&#8217;s bottom line.</p>
<p><a href="http://googlemobileads.blogspot.ca/2012/09/mobile-friendly-sites-turn-visitors.html">A study</a> conducted by Sterling Research and SmithGeiger surveyed 1,088 US adult smartphone Internet users and found that nearly 75% of users prefer a mobile-friendly site:</p>
<ul style="margin-bottom: 20px;">
<li>When they visited a mobile-friendly site, 74% of people say they’re more likely to return to that site in the future</li>
<li><span style="line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;">67% of mobile users say that when they visit a mobile-friendly site, they’re more likely to buy a site’s product or service</span></li>
</ul>
<p>The report goes on to suggest that not having a mobile-friendly site helps your competitors and can hurt your company&#8217;s reputation in several ways:</p>
<ul style="margin-bottom: 20px;">
<li>48% of users say they feel frustrated and annoyed when they get to a site that’s not mobile-friendly</li>
<li>36% said they felt like they’ve wasted their time by visiting those sites</li>
<li>52% of users said that a bad mobile experience made them less likely to engage with a company</li>
<li>48% said that if a site didn’t work well on their smartphones, it made them feel like the company didn’t care about their business</li>
</ul>
<p>If you&#8217;re a small business owner, start-up, or established company, it&#8217;s time to start thinking seriously about solidifying your mobile presence with a Web site designed with the small screen experience in mind.
